While it does lie within Italy, Vatican City is technically its own country. Vatican is the home of the Pope and the headquarters of the Catholic church. While the entire of Vatican can be done in a few hours, it is still quite an interesting place. The Vatican Museums consist of several museums/sites that require only one ticket. Among these is the famous Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's painted ceilings. Note that most of the things to see are within the museums so take you time and make sure you don’t miss it because you won't be allowed back in. Entering the city as well as Basilica di San Pietro are free and the ticket for the museums is cheap too. There are lots of scammers right outside the Vatican that will try and sell you tickets for the Sistine Chapel or specific museums. Do not buy these, all the museums come together on one ticket which is best bought online ahead of time. While the Vatican is a Catholic site, it is an interesting stop for anyone no matter their religion. The history and art make it a worthwhile stop next time you're in Rome.
